Sultan – Rare Heritage Show Lines
At Sugar Sky Farms, we are proud to offer hatching eggs from our beautiful Sultan chickens, carefully bred from renowned Lana Anderson show lines. These extraordinary birds are among the rarest and most elegant poultry breeds in the world, treasured for their stunning appearance, gentle nature, and rich history.
Originating in the palaces and gardens of the Ottoman Empire, the Sultan was known as Serai-Tavuk, meaning “Fowls of the Sultan.” These magnificent birds were once reserved for Turkish royalty and remain one of the most distinctive ornamental chicken breeds today.
Critically Endangered Heritage Breed
The Sultan is considered a critically endangered breed and is closely monitored by conservation organizations dedicated to preserving rare livestock genetics. Their rarity makes every breeding program important to the future of the breed.
Distinctive Features
Sultans are often described as one of the most elegant chickens in the world. Their unique characteristics include:
- Large rounded crest
- Full beard and muffs
- Red V-shaped comb
- Fully feathered legs and feet
- Five toes on each foot
- Rare vulture hock feathering
- Pure white plumage recognized by the American Poultry Association
Temperament

Egg Production
While not bred for egg production, Sultan hens typically lay approximately 50–70 small white eggs per year. Their true value lies in their beauty, rarity, and historical significance rather than their laying ability.
Important Care Considerations
Due to their elaborate crests and feathering, Sultans require a little extra care than standard backyard chickens. They are best suited to protected environments where they are safe from predators and bullying by more aggressive flock members. Clean, dry housing is essential to keep their feathered feet and plumage in excellent condition.
